Notorious, Part 1
Those feelings you get when you don’t understand something or don’t get it or it just doesn’t make any possible sense at all in your mind, and you think about all the time—in the shower, walking down the street, staring at your crush—it all just kind of attacks you. Like how does Andrew have those color eyes or how he so effortlessly makes friends with everyone, how his best friend is a control freak, but you can’t call him that to his face… Speaking of which, there he is.’ The speech inside her mind comes to a stop. She sighs, and then mutters to herself, “Walking right past me without any acknowledgment.”
Railine should know better than get disappointed. The boy whose parents are famous alumni and donate thousands of dollars to the school annually, whose best friend is the most notorious boy on campus, not so much for his relationships but for his constant pranks and disregard for the school rules. And there he is, walking right past her, laughing at something Leonardo said.
It’s not that she is not cool enough to go up and talk to him, and it’s not the fear of getting rejected that’s really stopping her. She doesn’t want to be just another girl to come up to him to confess her feelings and be bunched together with those others ones. She wants to do something memorable, impressive, so that when he notices, he really notices. She puts her head up, squaring her shoulders, and goes to throw her trash out, trying to get the image of the way the sun lit up his hair when he walked through the door out of her mind.
There is a burst of laughter from their table, and she rolls her eyes. Leo, the control freak and leader of the pack, is standing on the table and is making another pointless announcement, just like every other day. And everyone buys it. Others might see it as either trying for attention or a source entertainment, but Railine, although used to the constants interruptions, sees it as an establishment of power over the student body. Just maybe that’s another reason why Andrew is oblivious to her existence.
The bell signaling the end of lunch period goes off and Railine exits into the hallway which quickly fills up with other students scattering to get to class, melting into the sea of faces.
